Who’s behind this
Barbell & Bench is written by Stephen V., a home-gym enthusiast. That word is deliberate. I'm genuinely into this. I read the manuals, compile every published spec, and do the math on what a first home gym actually costs. No lab coat, no sponsorships, no "we tested 50 racks" claim I can't back up — just a beginner-first take on getting a real gym under $1,000.
You won’t find a claim here that we’re certified trainers, that we ran a lab test on forty machines, or that an “expert panel” reviewed anything. We’re not going to invent credentials to sound more authoritative. What we are is genuinely interested, honest about our limits, and willing to do the unglamorous work — reading manuals, compiling specs, and running the cost math — that most sites skip.
Why this site exists
Because beginners get pushed the wrong gear. Search “home gym” and you’re buried in 12,000-word lists recommending $3,000 racks and machines you don’t need. The person who’s never bought a dumbbell gets no clear answer to the only question they have: what do I actually buy?

How we make money

What we do — and don’t — do
We do compile every published spec, read the manuals, synthesize what real owners report, run the cost math, and give you a decisive recommendation. We don’trun a test lab, claim hands-on testing we didn’t do, invent ratings, or publish a price we can’t verify live. When we don’t know something, we say so. That transparency is the whole point — read exactly how it works in our methodology.
