Most review sites keep their methodology deliberately vague, because the honest version would undercut the “we tested everything in our lab” framing. We take the opposite approach: total transparency is our whole advantage. Here is exactly how we arrive at every recommendation on this site.
How we pick
Every product is run through the same three filters, in this order:
- Price and hard budget fit.Does it earn a place in a sub-$1,000 gym? We start from the beginner’s budget and work up, not from the most expensive option down.
- Beginner-friendliness. Can someone who has never trained use it safely and confidently on day one? A technically superior product that intimidates a beginner is the wrong pick for this audience.
- Space and noise fit. Will it work in a spare room, a garage corner, or an apartment — and be tolerable to the people around you? Footprint and noise are real constraints, not afterthoughts.
How we research
We build every recommendation from verifiable sources:
- Manufacturer specs and manuals.Weight ranges, capacities, certifications, and dimensions come from the maker’s own published documentation.
- Independent certificationslike ASTM, which we weight heavily because they’re third-party verified rather than seller claims.
- Synthesized owner reviews. We read what real buyers report — the recurring praise and the recurring complaints — and label it as exactly that: a synthesis of public reviews, not our own testing.
- The cost math. We calculate real totals — build costs, budget-remaining, payback vs. a membership — and show the numbers rather than asserting a conclusion.
What we did NOT do
This is the part that matters most. We have not tested these products on a lab rig. We don’t own a warehouse of racks, we haven’t drop-tested benches to failure, and we will never claim we did. When you read a spec or a durability note here, it comes from published documentation and owner reports, not from a torture test we ran. Saying that plainly is more useful to you than a “tested in our lab” claim we couldn’t back up — and it’s the honest thing to do.
Our live-price policy
We never publish a hardcoded price. Every price on this site is pulled from Amazon through an official data feed and stamped with the date it was verified. If a price is more than a couple of days old, it’s automatically removed and the button reverts to “Check price on Amazon” — so you never see a stale number presented as current. We also never invent ratings or review counts.
Corrections and updates
We’re not infallible, and prices, availability, and models change. Our roundups and builds are reviewed quarterly for accuracy, and each carries a visible “last updated” date. If you spot an error — a wrong spec, a discontinued product, a better pick we missed — email us and we’ll fix it promptly and note the change. Accuracy is the entire basis of trust here, so we treat corrections as a priority, not a chore.
