What "training to failure" actually means

Reps in reserve - the better default

Most beginners badly overestimate how close to failure they are, so early on it helps to occasionally take a safe set all the way to the limit just to feel where that edge actually is - then back off from it on your normal working sets. Where failure is actually fine
