Lay the panels and tubes out in the order you’ll use them, and sort the bolts, washers, and nuts into groups by size — an egg carton or a few cups works well.
This is also when you catch problems while they are cheap to fix. If a bolt bag is short or a hole is mis-drilled, you want to know now, not with a half-built frame in the middle of the floor. Pick the spot: space and a level floor
Assemble the rack where it will live, because a built cage is heavy and awkward to move. Build the base and stand the uprights

Add the crossmembers and pull-up bar

Hand-tighten, then torque in sequence

With the whole frame assembled and every bolt started, gently push and pull the rack until it stands square and plumb, then go around and hand-tighten each bolt so nothing can shift. Only then do you make the final pass: torque every bolt fully, working in a sequence— typically alternating across the frame rather than finishing one corner at a time, the way you would tighten wheel nuts on a car. This keeps the load even and the frame true.
Follow any torque values the manual gives. Where none are stated, the aim is firm and solid— snug enough that nothing moves, without stripping threads or crushing the tube. This final pass is where a budget cage stops feeling flimsy and starts feeling like a rack. Go around twice if you like; bolts often take a little more after the first full pass. This step, more than any other, is what “takes patience” on a cheaper cage, so don’t rush it.
Check it’s square, level, and stable
With everything torqued, verify the frame is right. Check that the uprights are plumb (vertical) and the crossmembers are level— a spirit level or a phone app is plenty. Confirm all four feet sit flat on the floor with no rock; if one foot lifts, shim it until the rack is planted. Give the whole frame a firm shake and watch for any bolt you missed or any joint that still has play. A rack that wobbles now will only feel worse under load, so fix it before you go further.

Fit the J-hooks and safeties — and set the heights
