How tight to make the bolts

This is the step beginners get wrong most often, and it has nothing to do with strength — it is about sequence. The instinct is to grab the first bolt and crank it down as tight as it will go before moving to the next one. Resist that. Fully tightening one bolt before the rest of that joint even has fasteners started can pull the bracket slightly out of alignment, so by the time you get to the last hole, it will not line up cleanly and you will be forced to back everything off and start over.

Instead, work in stages. Get every bolt in a given joint started by hand first — just snug, not tight — so the whole assembly can still shift a little and self-align. Once every hole has a bolt seated and finger-tight, go back around and tighten each one a bit more, moving in a pattern rather than finishing one side completely before starting the other. Do a final full pass with your wrench or Allen key only after that, checking each bolt in turn.

You do not need a torque wrench or a target number for a bolt-together bench, and you should be skeptical of anyone who quotes you one without your exact model in front of them. What you are aiming for is simple: firm enough that there is no play or wiggle in the joint, with the wrench meeting real resistance, but not so aggressive that you are straining against the tool or hearing the metal complain. The adjustment ladder and pop-pin mechanism

If a pin feels stiff or will not fully seat in a particular hole, do not force your body weight onto that position and hope it holds. The safety check before first use

Do this before you ever lie down and press over your face, every time, no exceptions. First, rock the bench. With it sitting flat on the floor, push down firmly on each corner and along the length of the frame. There should be no wobble, no creak of metal shifting against metal, and no rocking between the feet. If you feel any movement, do not use the bench yet — go back and find the loose joint.

Second, load-test it gently before you trust it with real weight overhead. Sit on it, then lie back on it, and shift your weight around while it is still close to the ground and easy to step away from. Press your palms into the pad and push, simulating some of the load a real set will put through the frame. You are not trying to break it; you are trying to feel for anything that flexes, shifts, or sounds different than solid metal should.

Third, go back over every single bolt with your tool in hand, not just by eye.
